A Moment in Time - April 2020
From my Concept Collection. In the spring of 2020, I struggled with motivation during the COVID-19 quarantine, creatively blocked and overwhelmed by the news. I watched in shock as the pandemic devastated our communities, hoping for some sign of hope. At the same time, I found myself strangely drawn to the form of the coronavirus, its spike-covered spherical shape. This led me to create a brooch, inspired by the concept of a time capsule.
I hand-carved a 2.5" sterling silver disc, engraving words that captured the darkness of that period. Each word or phrase tells its own story. At the center, I engraved the U.S. death toll by the end of April 2020: 63,000+. It was hard to fathom what that number would become in the months to follow. By the end of 2020, we were nearing 1 million deaths in the U.S. alone, with over 6 million worldwide.
People asked, "Why create a reminder of such pain?" I believe by preserving this moment, we can better prepare for the next crisis.
